School Highlights
The following school highlights showcase how Sycamore Elementary School is fulfilling Gwinnett County Public School's four strategic priorities of Empathy, Equity, Effectiveness, and Excellence. Visit the School Profile Dashboard to find more detailed data on our school.
- Sycamore Elementary School relaunched our PBIS initiative this year. Our school celebrated students and staff by recognizing desired behaviors with Longhorn Tickets. Students used these tickets at our PBIS store.
- Sycamore Elementary had many students in grades 3-5 participate in the county Science fair. One of our talented third grade students placed first overall in one of the categories and was recognized at the county awards ceremony.
- Our teacher of the year, Media Specialist Leslie Adames, provided many learning opportunities for Sycamore scholars this year. One of the highlighted events was a Story walk through downtown Sugar Hill that included the GCPS Book Mobile and Gwinnett County library.
- Sycamore Elementary teachers worked diligently to differentiate and accelerate learning for students. Due to this, our school increased the number of identified gifted students by this year, going from 5% to 11% overall.
- Relaunching our PTA was a focus at Sycamore Elementary School. Participation was impressive, with three main events held this year. These included a fall festival, Sweetheart Dance, and movie night.
- Sycamore Elementary School piloted two new programs this year. Kindergarten students participated in Joyful learning, an interactive play based program to build developmental and communication skills. Students in grades 1-4 engaged in the EL Education curriculum, learning through module and skills based lessons.
- Sycamore Elementary School was one of eight schools award a composting grant that included an on site composting bin being installed. Students learned about food waste and collected and analyzed data from the local school cafeteria.
- Community partnerships are vital to the success of Sycamore Elementary. This year we partnered with several local community groups including churches, the local library, and neighborhood outreach groups. These partners supported teacher recognition and school beautification projects.
- Our multilingual learners had great success this year, with many students exiting the program. We attribute this accomplishment to the rigorous instruction and differentiation provided daily in the classrooms.
- The Sycamore Parent Center supported two Play to Learn classes this year. This is one additional class from the year prior. Each class was comprised of 20-30 children and their parents. The focus of these lessons was to build an academic and developmental foundation to ready students for the school age experience.
