Academics, Leadership, Service, and Character

In order to qualify, a student must be a junior or senior who has maintained a solid 95 minimum cumulative average (not rounded up). Students are also evaluated on the basis of leadership, service, and character. (Brookwood National Honor Society (NHS)  is not affiliated with the National Society of High School Scholars [NSHSS]).

Students must complete an application process, which includes a teacher recommendation and commitment to fulfill a certain amount of service hours. Meetings are held monthly. 

• Students are invited to apply to NHS based on their GPA or Scholarship. Once the application is received it is given to the faculty council to evaluate the three remaining criteria of Leadership, Service and Character. 
• The faculty council is comprised of five teachers of different subjects. The council remains anonymous so that students and parents of applicants cannot attempt to influence them. These teachers then evaluate the students independently and then meet to discuss the applicants further. 
• Leadership and Service in the last two years has been limited due to Covid19 and we have taken this into consideration. Though, we have found that students have been able to come up with some very creative volunteer options that were both safe and helpful within the community. 
• Character is evaluated by discipline records and teacher recommendation forms. Each applicant has two teachers submit forms that first evaluate the students on a Likert scale and then a free response section for any additional comments they may want to add. As for discipline, candidates should demonstrate conduct or behavior with regard to school and community rules and policies or show sufficient growth and improvement to compensate for previous infractions and inadequacies.
