  • Dance Pathway Progressions

    Introduction To Dance:     Modern Dance 1, 2, 3, 4 (with levels allowing to repeat as needed) - Students are introduced to basic dance concepts and skills of dance technique including shape, form, line, contract and release, fall and recover, coordination, balance, core support, clarity of movement, and weight shifts. Students explore individual expression and creativity. The course stresses the importance of creative expression, and performance, with a connection to historical/cultural heritage and aesthetic analysis (e.g. traditional modern, post-modern Afro-modern, contemporary). Students learn various types of dance from ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, etc. 

    Intermediate Dance:        Dance 1, 2, 3, 4 (with additional levels allowing to repeat as needed) - Students further thier basic kowledge and skills of dance. The course introduces students to basic dance knowledge in order to develop coordination, flexibility, and strength while acquiring technical skills in preparation for further dance study. Students explore the role of dance in various cultures, and observe and critique dance performances using specified criteria and appropriate dance terminology. Students learn various types of dance from ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, etc. 

    Advanced Dance:                Ballet 1, 2, 3, 4  (with additional levels allowing to repeat as needed) - Students further thier enhanced kowledge and skills of dance. Students explore dance in a more in-depth way as they learn more advanced dance techniques. Students are immersed in dance vocabulary, performance opportunities, and outside dance experiences. Stresses aesthetic perception, creative expression and performance, historical and cultural heritage, and aesthetic judgment and criticism.  Students learn various types of dance from ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, tap, etc. 

    Upper Advanced Dance:      Dance Composition (BY TEACHER APPROVAL ONLY) - Students learn how to structure and lead a dance class including a compreheanisve dance warm-up. Students learn how to effectively communicate with thier peers while engaging in dance teaching. Students work as a suppor for the dance department. Students are given the opportunity to choreograph.
