Speech & Debate

  •

    Mission:

The primary goal of this club is to help improve student communication skills, critical thinking abilities, and public speaking confidence through practice and competition. Additionally, the club aims to promote intellectual discourse and foster a sense of community among its members.

    Description of Activities:

The club will conduct weekly meetings where members can practice their speaking skills and participate in  mock debates. Speech and debate can be an important part of middle school education to help students develop critical thinking skills to become more engaged and confident learners.  Students will immerse themselves in learning key research, analysis, and argumentative skills for becoming a competitive orator. These skills are important in all areas of life, from academic settings to future careers. Through weekly debate and speech topics, students will learn to analyze and evaluate information and form well-supported arguments. The ultimate goal is that speech and debate education will foster civic engagement by encouraging students to become active participants in their communities. Through debate and discussion, students learn about issues impacting society and can develop informed opinions and ideas about how to address them.

    * Students may need to meet after school or virtually for tournaments/competition preparation.
