The Collins Hill High School Dance Department provides students with the technical skills, vocabulary, and historical knowledge necessary to gain a clear understanding and appreciation in all areas of dance.  Course study involves jazz, ballet, modern dance, choreography, dance history and anatomy.  Each semester all  students will perform in a Dance Concert showcasing their talents and technical achievements of the semester.  The dance department offers classes in three levels that are available to students in all grade levels.  The intermediate and advanced class require a placement audition.

Introduction to Dance:  Open to all students.  No audition necessary.  This class is for students with little or no prior dance training and includes Jazz, Modern and Ballet.  Appropriate dance  attire is required. Hip Hop is NOT a part of the curriculum.

Intermediate Dance:  Audition Required.  Open to all grade levels.  2-3 years of dance training recommended.

Advanced Dance:  Audition Required.  Open to all grade levels.  5 years of dance training recommended.

Dance Composition:  Audition Required.  Open to all grade levels.  5 years of dance training plus experience in choreography recommended.

Music Tech students will have the opportunity to learn music technology basics including MIDI sequencing, the electronic   keyboard, DAW recording, and notation software. We will create original multi-track sequences and original music compositions, possibly for settings such as movie/TV scores, computer games, and commercials. Opportunities also exist for studying and applying basic recording and track-mixing techniques, as well as exploring careers associated with the music industry, including producers, engineers and managers.

Acting I (AUDITION REQUIRED: This is a prerequisite for other Theatre courses): Students will acquire skills in role   analysis, character development, vocal techniques, and communication of a text. Students will survey theatre history and the technical skills involved in production.  Students analyze and evaluate live theatre and explore the relationship between theatre and other art forms . Students must attend 2 productions during the school year. Students are encouraged to join  Drama Club and participate in fundraisers for the department.

Advanced Drama I  (AUDITION REQUIRED): This course focuses on casting, rehearsing and production of a play for an   audience. From the start of the school year, students will solve more complex theatrical problems through knowledge of cultural, social, and political aspects of a setting. Students will continue developing their skills as an actor through group exercises. Students are required to perform/ participate in the one act plays during the year. Some after school rehearsals will be required.

Musical Production  (AUDITION REQUIRED): This course focuses on casting, rehearsing and production of a   musical for an audience. From the start of the school year, students will begin sharpening their skills as an musical theatre performer through group exercises and the preparation of a Musical Revue and full-scale musical. Students are required to perform/ participate in the one  act  plays during the year.  Some after school rehearsals will be required.

Advanced Drama  IV (AUDITION REQUIRED): This course focuses on casting, rehearsing and  direction of one-act productions  for an audience. From the start of the school year, students will begin shaping their skills as actors and directors through group exercises and the preparation of student- directed one act plays.  Students are required to perform/participate in the one act plays during the year.  Some after school rehearsals will be required.

Technical Theatre  (Teacher recommendation/ Interview Required): Course presents basic principles and techniques of technical theatre needed to engineer and complete the requirements for a theatrical production. Study includes terminology, construction,technology, theatre safety procedures, and problem solving. Students learn to operate power tools under operating and safety guidelines to construct theatre sets and props. Students are expected to work backstage for one act competition, student- directed one acts, the play, and the musical

VISUAL ARTS I & II ARE REQUIRED BEFORE YOU CAN TAKE ANY OTHER ART COURSE.   

VISUAL ART I (2D) - This semester course encompasses exploration of the image and  makes use of techniques in drawing, printmaking, lettering, painting and collage.  A variety of two-mediums are used. 

VISUAL ART II (3D) - This semester course   involves exploration of concepts and  techniques of construction, assemblage, and media manipulations.  Clay, wire plaster and paper-mache are explored.

Drawing and Painting I, II, III (Grades 10-12 Teacher Approval) 

Students will acquire skills in a variety of drawing and painting techniques, while exploring chalk and oil pastel, charcoal, paint, ink , color pencil, etc...  Full year course.      

Studio Art: AP 2D, 3D or Drawing  (Grades 11-12 Teacher Approval)  These courses are geared toward those  students interested in pursuing the visual arts as a college major.  Students work intensively and exclusively on a portfolio for submittal to the college board, which in turn can be used for acceptance and potential scholarships at other schools and universities.  Prerequisite of Drawing and Painting, and teacher recommendation are required.   Full year course.

Photography I or II (Grades 10-12 Teacher Approval)  Students are introduced to the creation of images using light sensitive materials.  The technical areas addressed are: camera and lens theory, basic light and topics, exposure controls, fundamental darkroom operations and  equipment usage. Full year course. 

Sculpture (Grades 10-12 Teacher Approval)  Students study the basic elements of design as they relate to 3-D form. Students explore other additive and subtractive means of sculpture, as well as wheel and hand-building techniques in clay.  Historical and contemporary developments in sculpture are explored.  Full year course.
