Celebrating Our Cultures

Where in the World?

We celebrate our global community! In the sample news segment below, students of all ages have an opportunity to tell where they are from. Aside from celebrating each other, we are also improving our geography skills!

Sharing Our Art

Students have the opportunity to share their art on the morning news. Students from all over the globe share their culture and interests through art.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Aside from our bulletin board celebrating contributions by Hispanics, we display flags from Central and South America. We invite classes to listen to a Spanish/English read-aloud. We also have fun learning Latin dances. Since the Pinata is often used in Mexican fiestas, we created a “spinata” to celebrate Hispanic Heritage

Black History Month

During Black History Month, we feature beautiful books by Black authors and illustrators and books about great Black entertainers, politicians, inventors, scientists, teachers and more.

Students who check out and read books from our display are entered into a drawing for fun prizes. In addition, we have bulletin boards and banners introducing our children to some amazing people they may not have met before.

Many of our students have roots in Africa. How many African countries can you name? We have resources for you to practice! You can also pick up a copy of these maps in the media center.

Black History Month Door Decorating!  We need your help! Inspired by Ms. Cochran's door, and our school nurse's door in the past years, we are going to have an optional Black History Month Door Decorating Contest! If you love arts and crafts, would you consider helping your teacher decorate his or her door? We have butcher paper in the media center! The class with the best door wins a pizza party!

Don't miss the morning announcements. During the month of February, we highlight Black Americans through video, song and student reporting!

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

During the month of May, we feature books celebrating the contributions made by Asians around the globe. In addition, we display the flags of each country and posters. Using an interactive map, students and faculty can mention if they have visited an Asian country, want to travel there, immigrated from there and more.

Take the Name That Country Asia Challenge. How many Asian countries can you learn?

Watch the morning announcements for spotlights on amazing Asian and Pacific Islander Americans.

Each year, we add more and more activities to our celebrating cultures initiatives.  Stay tuned for more fun activities as we celebrate our global community.
