First Grade

Grade Level Overview

  • First grade is such an exciting year for our students!

Developing a life-long love of reading is one of our main goals.  Students are immersed in reading by participating in guided reading groups, independent reading, partner reading, listening centers, Accelerated Reading (AR) program, independent skills work, collaborative skills work in small groups, and whole group read alouds every week.  Along with this, we have special celebrations of reading throughout the year such as our Polar Express Day and Read Across America Day.

Writer's Workshop brings out the "author" in everyone!  We work throughout the week on not only the mechanics of writing (penmanship, grammar, spelling, etc.), but on the “craft” of writing.  Communicating effectively in writing is a huge goal for us.

Math is made practical and fun through the use of manipulatives that help students practice skills with a hands-on approach.  Math lessons go beyond just teaching the basic skills to help students practically apply math to their everyday lives. Students are given the opportunity to practice math skills by participating in partner activities/games, working independently, collaborating with other students, as well as working in small groups with teachers to get remediation or enrichment throughout the week.

Students are excited to learn about the world around them in Science and Social Studies.  Science and social studies are often integrated into our reading, writing, and math lessons, as well.
