• Readers Rally General Information

    History

    In 2005, the Gwinnett Readers Rally was started to foster a love of reading and encourage students who enjoy reading through exposure to a variety of literature and a fun competition experience. Mill Creek High School hosted the first competition with 27 teams. The Readers Rally competition has grown to almost 100 teams who participate each year.

    General Information about Readers Rally

    Readers Rally is a reading quiz bowl style competition for students in grades four through twelve. Students read books from a predetermined list and answer questions about those books. Each Gwinnett County school may send one team of ten players or less to the Readers Rally event.   

    High school teams read 15 books from the Georgia Peach Award for Teen Readers list each year. Elementary school and middle school teams have a list of 15 books created every year by a Gwinnett committee of media specialists, teachers, and parents.

    Where do parents park at the school? 

    The main parking lots at Parsons Elementary and Peachtree Ridge High School. Because of the later start time for middle school, middle school parents are encouraged to drop their student off at the front entrance of the high school and then proceed to park in the shuttle lot at Sugarloaf Methodist Church (1795 Old Peachtree Rd NW, Duluth, GA 30097).

    How do students prepare for the event?  

    The coaches for each team will let their students know specific practice dates and times to get ready for the county competition.  

    Are students and parents required to pay a fee to attend the event?  

    No – there is no charge for individuals. Each school pays a team registration fee. 

    What is the event schedule? 

    7:00 am Breakfast begins for adult volunteers

    7:15am Adult Volunteers arrive by this time

    7:30am Adult Volunteer Training and Student Volunteer Check-in

    8:00am High School/Elementary Coaches Check In

    8:30am Elementary Opening Ceremony Begins/High School Play Begins

    9:00am Elementary Play Begins/Middle School Coaches Check In

    9:30am Middle School Play Begins (No Middle School Opening Ceremony)

     

    Is there a closing ceremony?  

    Elementary closing ceremonies are in the main gym

    Middle and high school closing ceremonies are in the theater  

  • How are the lists of books determined for each level?

    High school teams read 15 books from the Georgia Peach Award for Teen Readers list each year. Elementary school and middle school teams have a list of 15 books created every year by a Gwinnett committee of media specialists, teachers, and parents.  

  • Are students on the team required to read all the books on the list for their level?

    Individual Readers Rally team members are not required to read all the titles for their level. The team as a group (five students per round) will answer questions on the content of all titles.  

  • Will anything else be taking place at the event?

    Scholastic will have a Book Fair in the commons area. Scholastic does charge sales tax.  

  • Will the school cafeteria be open for students to buy lunch?

    No – students will be given a snack and drink during the competition. The concessions will be available for purchase in the commons area. 

  • Are parents allowed?

    This year, parents will not be allowed to attend the competition for health safety reasons. 

  • Are younger siblings allowed to attend the competition?

    This year, only team members and the coaches will be allowed at the event.

  • What is the parent’s responsibility at the event?

    Parents need to bring their reader to the event on time. Readers are also to be picked up on time.

  • Winning Teams Next Steps

    Do the schools or students receive anything for participating in the event?  

    Individual students on the winning teams will each receive a medal and a book. 

    What do first place winners receive?  

    Plaques will be given to first place winning schools from each division. Trophies are given to the first and second place teams at each level on Championship Day.

    Do winners go on to another competition? 

    Yes – the top four elementary and middle school teams, as well as the top 2 high school teams will compete in the Championship Event during a school day during the month of March in the GCPS-TV studio at the Instructional Support Center (ISC). The Championship Competition will be televised on GCPS-TV at a later date.
