What is PBIS?
PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. There are three main components of PBIS. They are teaching appropriate behavior in all settings, providing interventions when behavior expectations are not met, and recognizing students when behavior expectations are met.
PBIS is a team-based school-wide design for discipline which includes all students and all staff in all settings. It is a program that can be modified as we go along to better meet the needs of our student population by using the results of surveys completed by students, parents, and staff and the analysis of discipline data.
PBIS in the Classroom
PBIS is implemented in Britt classrooms as well. The same expectations: Politeness, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, and Effort come together to promote desired outcomes for students and the classroom climate. Teachers use paper money called Comet Pride Bucks to keep track of student demonstration of Britt Comet Pride.
Classroom PBIS practices include preventative and responsive approaches that may be effectively implemented with all students in a classroom and intensified to support small groups or a few individual students.
Comet Pride Celebrations
To recognize students who consistently demonstrate the school-wide expectations, Britt has PBIS celebrations four times a year as well as opportunities for students to shop at our school PBIS reward store. Students who earn enough Comet Pride Bucks gather to celebrate during the school day and shop at our reward store on their designated grade-level day. In this way, students at Britt are recognized for behaviors that will serve them well throughout their school years and beyond.
