Dr. M.H. Mason Elementary School is named in memory of the late Dr. Miles H. Mason, a life-long Duluth resident and physician. In 1950 he opened his medical practice which is still in business today. Dr. Mason was a general practitioner and he took care of all ailments. He made house calls to people who were ill in the middle of the night and delivered many babies.

Dr. M. H. Mason Elementary School opened its doors in August of 1997 with 17 classrooms and just over 400 students in grades kindergarten through fifth. Preparing for its eighteenth year, the school anticipates having 36 classrooms and approximately 940 students. Mason’s growth and change has mirrored the growth and change in Gwinnett County. Since 1997, the school has become more diverse. Today, students from numerous cultures enrich the school’s environment beyond measure.

In 2015, Mason Elementary was recognized as a National Green Ribbon School for exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health and ensure effective environmental education. In addition, the school’s counselor was named National Counselor of the Year.

Dr. M. H. Mason Elementary School is named in memory of the late Dr. Miles H. Mason, a lifelong Duluth resident and physician. He skillfully dispensed medical care to the Duluth community for 43 years. Instrumental in delivering severral generations of Duluth families, Dr. Mason was fondly known as “Daddy Mason”. Dr. Mason encouraged a love of learning and a generous heart. Educators, parents, and members of the Mason Elementary community continue to strive to instill these traits in the students of the school.

In 2003, Mason Elementary became part of the Peachtree Ridge Cluster and no longer a part of the Duluth Cluster.

Elizabeth Deal Mason, his wife, was another influence in Duluth. She served on the Gwinnett County Board of Education. In addition, she spent much of her time helping at her husband's office.

The Masons raised five children. Miles is a surgeon with offices in the Duluth area. Claude is an attorney in Duluth. James plays professional golf. Beth is a registered nurse who works with her brother, Miles. The youngest son, Bill, is a pharmacist.

We consider it a great honor to be named Mason Elementary School in light of Dr. Mason's many accomplishments and contributions to the Duluth community.

This, in addition to Duluth’s favorable growth pattern, has earned it the reputation of a suburban oasis, making it a very desirable address, particularly at the start of a new millennium.

Duluth remains a busy hub today, continuing in the vanguard of the Metro area’s great business and residential expansion. Despite phenomenal growth, it has retained its small-town character, where personal camaraderie, spirited by annual holiday and festive events, is savored. Duluth is home to more than 26,688 residents who live, work and play in its 9.8 square-mile community. Its commercial corridor is among Gwinnett County’s busiest. Over 1,750 businesses are located within the City limits.
