  • What is the significance of arts in the MYP?

    arts

    Arts stimulate young imaginations, challenge perceptions and develop creative and analytical skills.

    Involvement in the arts encourages students to understand the arts in context and the cultural histories of artworks, supporting the development of an inquiring and empathetic world view.

    Arts challenge and enrich personal identity and build awareness of the aesthetic in a real-world context.

  • Chorus

    • 6th Grade Chorus - 6th grade choral members will be assigned a vocal part (soprano or alto) during the first week of rehearsals. 6th grade students perform two concerts a year and have opportunities for additional performances and potential solos. 

    • 7th Grade Chorus - 7th grade choral members will be assigned a vocal part (soprano, alto, or baritone) within the first week of rehearsals. 7th grade students perform in two chorus concerts as well as additional events such as POPS concert, Hispanic Heritage Celebration Night, and Large Group Performance Evaluation. Additional performance opportunities and potential solos are also available for 7th grade chorus students. Extra rehearsals may be scheduled prior to performances and all students will be expected to attend.

    • 8th Grade Chorus - 8th grade choral members will be assigned a vocal part (soprano, alto, or baritone) within the first week of rehearsals. 8th grade students perform in two chorus concerts as well as additional events such as POPS concert, Hispanic Heritage Celebration Night, Southern Star Music Festival, and Large Group Performance Evaluation. Additional performance opportunities and potential solos are also available for 8th grade chorus students. Extra rehearsals may be scheduled prior to performances and all students will be expected to attend.

  • Band

    • The 6th Grade Concert Band - This band consists of all beginning 6 grade band students. The classes are divided into a woodwind class and a brass/percussion class. The ensemble will perform two concerts per year.
    • The Symphonic Band - This band consists of 7th and 8th grade intermediate band members who will participate in the Georgia Music Educators Association Large Group Performance Evaluations and perform at school concerts. Extra rehearsals will be scheduled prior to performances and all students will be expected to attend.
    • Symphonic Winds- This band consists of 7th and 8th grade advanced band members who will participate in the Georgia Music Educators Association Large Group Performance Evaluations and perform at school concerts. These members are also required to audition for the GMEA District Band in the fall. Extra rehearsals will be scheduled prior to performances and all students will be expected to attend.

  • Digital Arts

    Digital Arts is a semester course that is designed to help students gain skills to independently think through challenging technology by critically analyzing programs.  Students will become familiar with a complex program such as Photoshop. Additionally, students will explore local to global periods of art, from past to present, as they gain an understanding and appreciation of art forms and fundamentals. 

  • Orchestra

    Orchestra is a performance-oriented class in which students learn the skills to play a string instrument. Each student will learn to perform individually and in a group for audiences large and small. Emphasis will be on confidence, musicality, practice skills, and performance etiquette.

    • Concert Orchestra- The concert orchestra is for 6th grade students. Students in orchestra can choose to play violin, viola, cello, or upright bass. There is no need for prior experience in music or performance to join. The ensembles will perform two concerts per year.
    • Symphonic Orchestra- This group is for 7th grade students and perform at school concerts. Extra rehearsals may be scheduled prior to performances and all students will be expected to attend.
    • Philharmonic Orchestra (formerly called “Varsity”)- The 8th Grade orchestra members participate in the Georgia Music Educators Association Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE)  and perform at school concerts. Extra rehearsals may be scheduled prior to performances and all students will be expected to attend.

  • Visual Arts

    The visual arts program offers explorations in painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture. Students will also learn about the history, analysis, and interpretation of art.
