• School Climate

School climate, the quality and character of a school, is the responsibility of all education stakeholders with particular opportunities for school counselors. Research demonstrates that when students have a strong connection to their school, including positive relationships with peers and adults, their academic achievement increases, behavior improves and dropout rate decreases.

At Berkeley Lake, we believe each child "belongs" to each faculty member. This promotes a strong school climate and team attitude. This attitude reflects the warm, supportive school climate where teachers, administration and counselors create an environment conducive to learning.

  • DeBUG

The purpose of the DEBUG system is to give children a series of steps that they can use to solve problems when other children are “bugging” them. It helps children learn to be assertive and encourages them to be responsible for their own behavior and self-control. It also defines the adult’s role as one of helping children after they have tried to solve the problem.

The five steps of the DEBUG system are simple. The children have been taught that if someone is “bugging” them, they are to do the following:

Decide to ignore………… if that doesn’t work, then

Exit. Move Away……………if that doesn’t work, then

Be Friendly…………………if that doesn’t work, then

Use Firm Words………….if that doesn’t work, then

    Get Adult Help…………...........................................

In the event that your child(ren) feels bullied, scared, unsafe and/or hurt, your child(ren) is taught to use ONLY the following two DEBUG steps to ensure his/her safety.

    1. EXIT. MOVE AWAY and

    2. GET ADULT HELP IMMEDIATELY.

  • No Place for Hate

No Place For Hate® is a program of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) that helps schools enhance or create a culture of respect. No Place For Hate® is designed to celebrate diversity and empower members of the school community to challenge all forms of bigotry. By participating in No Place For Hate®, a school or school system has the opportunity to reduce bullying, name-calling, and other expressions of bias; create a safer learning environment; promote unity and pride, and live by the core value of respect for others.

For the past six years, Berkeley Lake became a No Place for Hate designated school! This year we will continue to implement the program.
