Twin Rivers Dispensing of Medication Policy

The faculty and staff of Twin Rivers Middle is vitally interested in the health and welfare of all students. For the safety of all students at our school, the following guidelines should be followed when requesting administration of medications at school:

• Only those medications required during school hours should be administered at school. Please check with your physician regarding the need for medications to be administered during school hours.
• All medications, both prescription and over-the- counter, must be brought in by a parent or guardian accompanied by a completed Administration of Medication Request form and brought to the school clinic. The school does not stock over-the-counter medications. Students may not transport medications to school. We ask that you do not bring containers with more than 200 tablets.
• All medications must be in an original child-proof container. Prescription medications must be in their labeled prescription bottle. School staff will only administer medication according to the directions on the label.
• Any medications remaining at the end of the school year must be picked up or school staff will dispose of them.
• Students may only carry medication as prescribed by law with the required documentation. Please check with our school clinic worker if your child needs to carry emergency medications with them.

Students are never to have medication in their possession while attending school.  All medicines, (prescription and non-prescription) are to be kept in the clinic and administered there.  Students who are in possession of medication are subject to disciplinary action as outlined under Gwinnett County Public Schools Code of Conduct Rule 7.

Asthma Inhalers

According to State Bill 472, effective 7/1/02, students may possess and self-administer asthma medication while at school or at a school-sponsored activity only after a parent/guardian has completed a student asthma action plan.  A physician will need to complete a portion of this form before the medication is brought to school.
