  • How will my counselor work with me?

How will my counselor work with me?

    • in the classroom. Classroom guidance lessons are conducted at all grade levels regularly and follow Gwinnett County counseling competencies and standards. These lessons address topics such as careers, test-taking, study skills, decision-making, friendship, personal safety, and problem-solving.

    • small groups. Students are referred by teachers and parents to participate in small-group counseling. Group topics may include family changes, grief and loss, social skills, self-concept, and academic support/school success.

    • individually. Counselors see students individually at the request of a teacher or administrator, parent, or student. Counselors may also make referrals to outside agencies when requested by parent(s) or when a counselor feels it necessary.

    • consultation. Counselors consult and collaborate with many individuals, including teachers, school social workers, DFACS, parents, and administrators in an effort to support students and remove barriers to learning.

  • Why does my school have a counselor?

Why does my school have a counselor?

The counselor is at your school to help you solve problems and feel better so that you can be successful in school. Counselors teach students…

    • how to cope with feelings
    • how to get along with friends
    • how to solve problems
    • how to achieve school success
    • how to stay safe
    • about jobs and careers

School counselors also help parents and teachers better understand their student's social, emotional, and educational needs.  School counselors can offer support to students and their families who are experiencing a crisis situation.

  • How Counselors Help

My school counselor can help me with:

    • making friends
    • adapting to a new school
    • classroom behavior
    • coping with family changes such as a new family member, divorce, or death
    • completing work
    • being bullied or conflict with peers
    • anything that interferes with school success

School counselors are advocates for ALL students. The counselor works with teachers, principals, parents, and people in the community so that I can do my best at school.
