  • BACK TO SCHOOL MEDIA CENTER ORIENTATION

This year I tried something different with my media center orientations for first - fifth grade.

First and second grade students listened as I read the book, The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School by Laura Murray. After reading the story I told them that a Gingerbread Man was loose in our media center and has left clues for them to review different parts of the media center. I also told them that if they find all of the clues, they would earn a special prize. The students loved walking around and finding all of the clues. They were all disappointed at the end when they didn't see the Gingerbread Man. Later whenever students returned to the media center to checkout books they cheerfully ask me if the Gingerbread Man was in the media center now. I would giggle inside then say with my serious face no he is not here today.

Third - fifth grade students went on a treasure hunt for their orientation. They followed Bookaneer clues to review different parts of the media center. During the orientation I introduced the students to the Destiny Discover media catalog. Most all of the students said they liked this view of the catalog better than Destiny Quest. After the Destiny Discover introduction several students found a book on the shelf based on the call number.

Overall, the orientations were a huge success. All the students did a wonderful job solving all of the clues. I loved watching their enthusiasm and seeing them cooperate to find the answers to the clues while learning about using the media center.
