- Foundations of Energy & Power Technologies
-
This course is the equivalent to Foundations of Energy and Power Technologies in the high school curriculum and is open to all rising 8th grade students. The students who complete and pass this year long course are eligible to receive a high school Carnegie Unit. This class gives the students the potential to take Alternative Energy Sources as a freshman and allows the opportunity for more accelerated completion of the Energy Systems career pathway during the high school years. This class also provides the opportunity to explore interest in the Engineering and Technology program concentration before entering high school.
This introductory course is designed to allow students to develop a broad understanding of the energy industry including infrastructure, generation, transmission and distribution of nonrenewable, renewable, and inexhaustible energy sources. Energy sources will be researched to include the regional and global economic implications, environmental, and sustainability issues. Students will explore future trends of energy and power and, through research, students will develop an alternative energy system that will demonstrate their understanding of a unique approach to energy and power generation. Throughout the course, students can expect to work in collaborative groups to solve real-world energy problems, explore the possibilities of alternative energy sources, and be exposed to careers related to the development of innovative power, energy, and transportation technologies.
All parents of 7th grade students will receive information about this course before the end of March. There are only 33 spaces in this course, all of which require a teacher recommendation. If more than 33 students apply then students will be chosen based on a lottery.
